The Spread or Line is used as an allowance to handicap the team favored to win. In sports betting, the bookmaker will predict that the favorite team will win by a specific number of points. This number of points is the line or point spread. The favorite is displayed by a minus sign (for example -3) and the underdog by a positive number often shown with plus sign (for example 9 or +9). If a bettor wagers on the favorite, the bettor will win the bet if the favorite wins and the margin of victory is more than the point spread. If a bettor wagers on the underdog, the bettor will win if the underdog wins, ties, or if the favorite wins but fails to surpass the point spread.
Money Line betting is used many sports, but is most common in baseball and hockey. Money line wagering is betting on the contest based on a fixed price rather than a point spread. The team bet on has to win the game straigt out, no matter the score. A minus sign (for example -120) displays the favored team and the amount that must be wagered to win $100. A plus sign (for example +150) displays the underdog and the amount a bettor would win for every $100 wagered. In the examples shown, a bettor would wager $120 to win $100 on the favored team. To bet the underdog, the bettor would wager $100 to win $150.
Totals or the Over/Under is the number of points the bookmaker expects will be the overall total score for both teams in the contest, including overtime. A bettor wagers on whether the total points scored in the match will be more or less than the Over/Under number.
